There is a reason the pyramids still stop people, and it is not scale. It is accuracy.

I trained as a toolmaker, so the first thing I looked for in this piece was the edge. The base of the Great Pyramid sits level to within a couple of centimetres across thirteen acres, and its four sides face true north, south, east and west to within a fraction of a degree. Someone set that out by hand, four and a half thousand years ago, and it has not moved since. That is the kind of work I understand.

So I drew it the way it was built — one line at a time. The stone faces are cross-hatched in thousands of short strokes, each following the slope of the casing, so the surface reads as weathered block rather than flat grey. The Sphinx sits low in the middle ground, deliberately small, doing what it has always done. The palms in the foreground are the only living thing in the frame, and they are there for exactly that reason.

It is drawn in portrait so the sky carries the upper half of the frame. On a wall, that open space is what lets the piece breathe.

● The Sand Edition (Colour): Warm ochre and pale desert light under a soft blue-grey sky. The colour is held back on purpose — enough to place you on the plateau in the late afternoon, never enough to compete with the linework.
